Good first edition. Some bumping and wear to spine ends. Some very minor bumping and wear to edges, corners. Some rubbing to illustrated front board. Small glue residue to bottom left corner of front board, most likely from an old price-sticker. Some light foxing to both front and rear pastedowns and endpapers, to edges of textblock. Age-toning to both front and rear endpapers, pastedowns. Other pages clean and bright but for some very slight age-toning and foxing around edges. Contains four pages bound into the end of the book listing Chatto and Windus' "Cheap Two Shilling Popular Novels", followed by thirty-two pages with an alphabetical catalog of Chatto and Windus' "Fiction and General Lit" as of September 1901. An extremely scarce title by the noted English journalist of the Russo-Turkish war, and prolific author of novels, of whose work George Gissing wrote in his diary: "heard of the book as good; of course find it very poor." A nice first edition of Murray's scarce novel, originally advertised in the Spectator's edition of January 25th 1902 as "a highly ingenious and intricate story (. . .) told with Mr. Christie Murray's usual verve and vigour.".
